The Sermon on the Plain, Part Four

Luke 6:43 - 49
The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity. Proverbs 11:3

You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you: "These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” Matthew 15:7-8

Stop living under judgment vs. 43 - 45

· Forget about outer appearances

The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart. I Samuel 16:7

Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight. I Peter 3:3-5

· Focus on inner realities

Start living wisely vs. 46 - 49

· Pay attention to God

Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers. Psalm 1:1 - 3

· Practice what he says

Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it-he will be blessed in what he does. James 1:21-25

Your Spiritual “Aha!” Moments
Easter Sunday

John 20 and Luke 24

When we figure out who is God

When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, "Surely he was the Son of God!" Matthew 27:54

Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. Matthew 16:16 – 17

When we see we need help

The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times." And he went outside and wept bitterly. Luke 22:61-62

When the cross makes sense

The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, 2 Corinthians 4:4

From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and … that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. Peter …began to rebuke him. "Never, Lord!" he said. "This shall never happen to you!" Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men." Matthew 16:21-23

For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. I Corinthians 1:18

When we have life

He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. 1 John 5:12-13

When we declare our faith

Now Joseph [of Airmathea] was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jews. John 19:38

Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body. Mark 15:43

When we accept the mission

… repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations … You are witnesses of these things. Luke 24:47-48

When revelation continues

Then Peter began to speak: "I now realize … Acts 10:34

Feeling Forgiven
Sunday April 15, 2007

For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them - yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me. I Corinthians 15:9 -10

We first must feel unworthy v. 9

… I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man … sinners - of whom I am the worst …. me, the worst of sinners
I Timothy 1:13, 15 - 16

If others have reason for confidence in their own efforts, I have even more! … I obeyed the Jewish law so carefully that I was never accused of any fault. …I once thought all these things were so very important, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done. … I no longer count on my own goodness or my ability to obey God's law, but I trust Christ to save me.
Philippians 3:4, 6, 7, 9 New Living Translation

Then we can experience grace v. 10

Your hearts should be strengthened by God's grace, not by obeying rules
Hebrews 13:9 New Century Version

The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly … I was shown mercy so that … Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience
I Timothy 1:14, 16

And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. II Corinthians 9: 8
