July 3, 2005 Dual Citizenship
I Peter 2:9 – 17

To God's elect, strangers in the world .., 1 Peter 1:1

We are pilgrims, not vagabonds

Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God's people and members of God's household, Ephesians 2:19

Citizenship in Heaven
But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ Philippians 3:18-21

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.

1. Heavenly citizenship is by adoption

2. Responsibilities
a. Praise God
b. Live right

Citizenship on Earth
Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. For it is God's will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men. Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God. Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king.

1. Earthly citizenship is by
a. Descent “right of the blood”
b. Place of birth “right of the soil”
c. Marriage
d. Naturalization

2. Responsibilities
a. Submit to authorities
This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God's servants, who give their full time to governing. Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor. Romans 13:6-7
b. Do good
c. Respect: love, fear and honor

Receive The Spirit!

John 14:15 - 27; 15:26, 27; 16:7 - 15

Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed? Acts 19:2

The Holy Spirit

1. Gives peace

But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
John 14:26-27

2. Reveals truth

3. Provides courage

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses Acts 1:8

4. Spreads conviction

When he [the Holy Spirit] comes, he will convict the world …
John 16:8

We experience the Spirit

1. As a person of the Godhead

Jesus answered:… Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. … I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me … The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me … I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever- the Spirit of truth. John 14:9 – 11, 16, 17

"When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me. John 15:26

2. As God’s indwelling presence with salvation

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever - the Spirit of truth. … you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
John 14:16-17

And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. John 20:22

3. Through obedience

"If you love me, you will obey what I command. … Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. John 14:15, 23

4. Through another type of baptism

John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, … "I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him … the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.'…” John 1:29, 32, 33

He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit." … you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:3-5, 8

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Acts 2:1-4

Clam Up, Blow Up or Grow Up!

Ephesians 4:26 - 32

A quick-tempered man does foolish things Proverbs 14:17

A hot-tempered man stirs up dissension, but a patient man calms a quarrel. Proverbs 15:18

A hot-tempered man must pay the penalty; if you rescue him, you will have to do it again. Proverbs 19:19

Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry James 1:19

Anger is often a secondary emotion to …

1. Hurt

2. Frustration

3. Fear

Anger is sin when …

1. You do not have a justifiable cause

Then Jesus asked them, "Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?" But they remained silent. He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored. Mark 3:4-5

In the temple courts he found men selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple area, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. To those who sold doves he said, "Get these out of here! How dare you turn my Father's house into a market!" John 2:14-16

2. You direct it towards a person

But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. Matthew 5:22 NKJV

3. You seek revenge

Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord. Romans 12:19

4. You won’t let it go

Control your temper by …

1. Confronting it immediately

2. Shutting the door on the devil

3. Guarding your speech

4. Growing in the Spirit

But the fruit of the Spirit is … self-control. Galatians 5:22-23

So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. Galatians 5:16

5. Replacing it with Christ like behaviors
