Mercy, Me?
Romans 9:14-18

Mercy is the aspect of God’s love that moves him to help those who are miserable

1. He has lots of it

But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy
Ephesians 2:4

2. He dispenses it as he pleases

3. He forgives guilty people

The Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against him; Daniel 9:9

Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners-of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life. 1 Timothy 1:13-16

4. He helps hurting people

As Jesus and his disciples were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed him. Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was going by, they shouted, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!" The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet, but they shouted all the louder, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!" Jesus stopped and called them. "What do you want me to do for you?" he asked. "Lord," they answered, "we want our sight." Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him. Matthew 20:29-34

God expects us to be merciful

1. Learn it

If you had known what these words mean, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned the innocent.
Matthew 12:7

"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices-mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law-justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. Matthew 23:23

2. Like it

He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8

If a man's gift is … showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.
Romans 12:6, 8

3. Live it

Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom, because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment! James 2:12-13

Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Matthew 5:7

Raising a President:
What Lem’s Mom Taught Him

Proverbs 31:1-9
Relationships vs. 1 – 3

1. Recognize differences

2. Caution about dangers

3. Understand beauty

Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight. 1 Peter 3:3-4

Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. Proverbs 31:30

Self Control vs. 4 – 7

1. Accept responsibility

2. Be clear minded

The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray. 1 Peter 4:7

Leadership vs. 8 – 9

1. Speak for the weak

2. Defend the poor

I know that the LORD secures justice for the poor and upholds the cause of the needy. Psalms 140:12

He who is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will reward him for what he has done. Proverbs 19:17

Healing

Isaiah 53:4 - 6
Divine healing is…
· … provided in the atonement

He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. 1 Peter 2:24
· … possible through medical help
· … pictured at communion

Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself. That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. But if we judged ourselves, we would not come under judgment. 1 Corinthians 11:27-31

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. James 5:16

· … powered by preaching the gospel

One day as he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law, who had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem, were sitting there. And the power of the Lord was present for him to heal the sick. Luke 5:17

… and he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. Luke 9:2

· … procured with faith

Jesus said to him, "Receive your sight; your faith has healed you." Luke 18:42

And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith. Matthew 13:58

By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus' name and the faith that comes through him that has given this complete healing to him, as you can all see. Acts 3:16

He listened to Paul as he was speaking. Paul looked directly at him, saw that he had faith to be healed Acts 14:9

Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.
James 5:1

Money Matters

Money is not …

1. A measure of success

Then he said to them, "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions." Luke 12:15

2. A component of self-worth

The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart." 1 Samuel 16:7

3. A reward for spiritual living

In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat — for he grants sleep to those he loves. Psalms 127:2

4. A guarantee of satisfaction

Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is meaningless. Ecclesiastes 5:10

Money is …

1. A temptation

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
1 Timothy 6:10

2. A tool

You may say to yourself, "My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me." But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth… Deuteronomy 8:17-18

3. A test

Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it. Malachi 3:10

Share with God's people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Romans 12:13

4. A testimony

But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers." Luke 22:32

No Condemnation More Than Conquerors:

Romans 8:1 – 4

“ katakrima” = judgment against
We are condemned by …
1. Ourselves
2. Our behavior
3. Our Accuser

For the accuser of our brothers, who accuses them before our God day and night … Revelation 12:10

Zecharaiah 3:1 – 7 Job 1:6 - 12; 2:1 - 7

Ways we handle feelings of condemnation
1. Try to ignore
2. Wallow in them
3. Examine and extract

In Christ

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. John 3:16-17

Again, the gift of God is not like the result of the one man's sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification. For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God's abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ. Romans 5:16-17

1. He covers my shame
2. He protects me from punishment
