Breaking Free From Sin and Addictions

Romans 7:15-20

The Power of Sin

A sin is a rebellious action or attitude

Sin is bondage to our human nature

Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. Romans 6:12

For when we were controlled by the sinful nature … we bore fruit for death. Romans 7:5

Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God. Romans 8:8

The path to freedom from sin

1. Repent

Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out Acts 3:19

2. Spiritual life

You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. Romans 8:9

3. Do the right things

Do not let any part of your body become a tool of wickedness, to be used for sinning. Instead, give yourselves completely to God since you have been given new life. And use your whole body as a tool to do what is right for the glory of God Romans 6:13 NLT

The Grip of Addiction

A habit is a behavior repeated until it becomes automatic and difficult to stop

An addiction is a compulsive behavior we do to avoid difficult emotions or experiences (BAD HALT)

I will not be dominated by anything. 1 Corinthians 6:12

The path to freedom from addiction
1. Honesty
2. Spirituality
3. Therapy
4. Accountability

Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey-whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were entrusted. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.
Romans 6:16-18
